Building Homes, Hope and Community – One Hair Cut at a Time

November 2, 2009 by kjw27612

logo_horizontalNovember 2, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – A Cut-a-Thon to raise money for Habitat for Humanity of Wake County will be held Thursday, November 12, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Lather Hair Salon off Glenwood Avenue North/Highway 70, Raleigh.

The money Lather raises will be used to help sponsor Habitat/Wake’s 2009 Holiday Home Tour & Party later in November.

“We want to show our support for Habitat/Wake’s on-going mission to build good, affordable homes for low-income families who simply can’t qualify for traditional mortgages,” said Lather’s owner and senior stylist Jessica Williams. “The annual Homes Tour & Party are also fundraisers for Habitat/Wake. So by helping to sponsor that wonderful event – during which tour goers get to see a collection of homes Habitat has built – we can extend Lather’s donation beyond the money we raise during the cut-a-thon.”

From 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on November 12, Lather will donate the usual payment for every hair cut done that day to Habitat/Wake. Lather’s hair cut prices are: women’s cuts $38-$50; men’s $22-$31; and children 10 and under $18-$26. (Stylists’ tips are not included.)

Complimentary beverages will be served during the Habitat/Wake Cut-a-Thon, and a donation box will be on hand so customers can donate even more if they want.

“The box will also be there for anyone who may not need a hair cut that day but still wants to donate,” Williams added.

Since 1985, Habitat for Humanity of Wake County has joined with individuals and local organizations to build simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with families living at modest income levels. Habitat for Humanity helps people build and buy their own homes by creating opportunity, not dependency.

“So we’re hoping lots of folks will decide to make their next hair cut count for more than just style and beauty,” Williams said. “By getting your hair cut at Lather that day, you’ll be supporting one of the best causes out there. We encourage everyone to remember the Habitat mission: ‘Building homes, building hope, building community.’ “

Lather will accept walk-ins and appointments for the Habitat Cut-a-Thon. To make an appointment, call 919-792-0715.

Canadian Magazine Chooses Lather Hair Salon for Photo Shoot

October 18, 2009 by kjw27612

October 16, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – When Canada-based Rouge Magazine researched salons in the Triangle area to find a location for a photography shoot, beauty editor Gabrielle Johnson and art director Daniel Mackinnon chose Lather Hair Salon in North Raleigh.

Last week, Lather’s stylists gave model Carolina Cely of Greensboro a full make-over while Rouge photographer Bruce DeBoer captured the process and results for an upcoming feature in the magazine.

Why Lather? “Gabrielle said she looked for a Wella salon that was media savvy, and that she really liked the look and feel of our salon,” said owner and senior stylist Jessica Williams. “It was very exciting. They came all the way from Canada!”

A Wella salon is a hair salon that uses and sells Wella hair care products. Lather uses Wella color systems exclusively.

For the photo shoot, stylist Lauren Lawson created the model’s Wella hair color. Williams did the styling and cutting. For makeup, Williams brought in local makeup artist Pamela Hung.

The salon’s “media savvy” derives from Williams’ education in communications and public relations, a degree she received from North Carolina State University in addition to her cosmetology education and license. In February 2008, she also contracted with blueplate pr, a boutique public relations agency in downtown Raleigh.

Among the media attention Lather has attracted since teaming with blueplate is a recent feature in Salon Today magazine’s online edition. The article focused on Lather’s “Latherwear” logo tee shirts (this past summer) and new “hoodies” for fall and winter as a marketing effort to extend the salon’s brand out into the community.

As for the “look and feel” of the salon, Lather is a relatively small shop whose décor features a rich and trendy blue and brown color scheme punctuated by black styling and shampoo stations, including large, black-framed mirrors at each station. Stylish furnishings and a stained concrete floor complete the look.

“We were absolutely delighted that Rouge chose Lather for the makeover shoot,” said Wiliams, who will celebrate her first year of doing business this month. “It was a great early anniversary present!”

October 13, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – To celebrate her first anniversary of doing business, Lather Hair Salon owner and senior stylist Jessica Williams is discounting all products and salon services by 20 percent from October 26 through the 31st.

“We want to show our gratitude to regular and new clients by giving back to them as we mark one year in business,” Williams said. “Everybody loves saving, especially in this economy, so we couldn’t of a better way to say ‘thanks’ than slashing all prices during our anniversary week.”

Williams opened Lather Hair Salon opened in October of 2008 on Glenwood North at 8521 Cantilever Way, billing her new business as “an upscale salon with no attitudes.” Since then, she has been building a team of talented, experienced stylists and steadily increasing her client base.

“I’m very pleased with how far we’ve come since last October,” she said. “I’ve got a great staff now that just keeps getting better through the continuing education opportunities we attend and a steady flow of clients, many of which have become regulars.”

September 23, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – When Lather Hair Salon introduced “Latherwear” this summer, the Raleigh salon’s logo tee-shirts sold out as regular and new clients welcomed the discount that came with purchasing one of the all-cotton tees.

That promotion officially ended, like summer, on Labor Day. Now Lather Hair Salon has rolled out its new fall and winter Latherwear: soft brown hooded sweatshirts emblazoned with Lather’s light-blue logo. And with each purchase ($39.95), clients receive 20 percent off all the services they receive that day. If their services total $200, the “hoodie” is free.

“The logo tees were so popular this summer that we wanted to keep it going,” said Lather’s owner and senior stylist Jessica Williams. “We love the idea of folks wearing our ‘Latherwear’ out there, and we know they appreciate a discount in this difficult economy.”

The “Latherwear” logo hoodies are the newest special offering at Lather Hair Salon. The salon’s website continues to offer a 20-perent-off coupon for first-time clients only as well as other daily specials, such as “hair makeover Mondays” and “hump day highlights.”

Latherwear hoodies are only available in the salon, which is located at 8521 Cantilever Way, Suite 109, just off North Glenwood Avenue/Highway 70 West near Carmax. For more information, including business hours, visit www.latherhairsalonnc.com.

Lather Hair Salon To Sponsor Habitat/Wake’s 2009 Homes Tour

September 15, 2009 by kjw27612

September 15, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – Lather Hair Salon, a full-service salon in North Raleigh, has signed on to help sponsor the Habitat for Humanity of Wake County’s 2009 Homes Tour.

For several years, Habitat Wake has begun the holiday season the Sunday before Thanksgiving with its Home Tour of a particular neighborhood in which several Habitat houses have been built. The event includes a holiday party at the ReStore on Raleigh Boulevard where Habitat Wake sells usable building materials at a deep discount to raise money for building Habitat homes.

To defray the costs of the tour and party, sponsors underwrite the event and local restaurants donate food and beverages. All funds raised through tickets sales to the event go directly into building homes and supporting families, according to Missy Hatley, assistant director of development at Habitat Wake.

“I can’t think of another community outreach that deserves our support more than Habitat for Humanity,” said Lather Hair Salon’s owner and senior stylist Jessica Williams. “Building healthy, affordable homes for families who so desperately need them is such a remarkable service to any community, including our own here in Wake County. We’re honored to help sponsor the Home Tour — to celebrate and show off what Habitat Wake volunteers have accomplished this year.”

Lather Hair Salon makes it a regular practice to get involved in charitable efforts. Most recently, the salon turned its back-to-school sale into a collection drive for Matter of Trust, the umbrella organization that sponsors the Oil Spill Hair Mats program. Throughout the special, Lather stylists collected hair clippings that will be turned into mats that help clean up oil spills.

Habitat Wake will announce more details of its 2009 Home Tour in the near future. To learn more about Habitat Wake and the ReStore, visit www.habitatwake.org.

Style Advice: Simple Steps Toward A New Look for the New Season

September 10, 2009 by kjw27612

September 10, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – With fall only a few weeks away, it’s time to start thinking of changes to your hair to complement the seasonal changes in your wardrobe.

Lather Hair Salon in Raleigh offers the following Seasonal Style Tips for updating your look for Fall 2009.

Hair Color and Highlights:

The bright blonde locks that looked wonderful at the beach don’t offer the same effect in cooler weather. One word: warmth. Just as warmer clothes define the change of the season, so should warmer hair tones.

And the biggest trend for hair this fall is red. It’s a hot color that looks great on any hair type. From toned-down copper colors to bright apple-red, this outstanding shade will give you dimension and freshness for the upcoming “sweater weather.”

Going red all over looks amazing, but you don’t have to be a “red-head.” For blondes, try adding some strawberry blonde highlights to your natural shade. Copper shades will also help tone down bleach-blonde hair for fall. Brunettes should try deeper shades of red, such as auburn and bold red. These colors look amazing as highlights or all-over color.

Cuts and Styles:

As for cuts, the bob has been going strong this year and will still be popular this fall. The cropped bob is an edgy, shorter version of the classic cut. This look is short all over and can be worn with blunt or fringed bangs. The pixie crop is even shorter, but remember:  It’s essential to embrace messy, loose tousles with this cut.

For longer styles, Fall is the perfect time to master the sleek blow-out. There will be less humidity to frizz your ‘do, so now is the time to conquer those sleek, straight strands.

The 1940s “mermaid look” is also a very fashionable style this season. It’s sleek and shiny yet loaded with sexy waves and curls.

About Lather Hair Salon:

Facebook Fans Get Deep Discounts at Lather Hair Salon

August 24, 2009 by kjw27612

August 24, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – There are all sorts of reasons why people join Facebook, arguably the most popular “social media” source out there: to keep up with current friends and locate old ones; to make business contacts and open doors; to “network” from your desk and raise your visibility; to develop a personal brand, target a niche, get access to no-cost marketing; and so on.

Now there’s another reason: To get deep discounts on hair care services.

Lather Hair Salon, a new full-service salon in North Raleigh, offers special same-day deals to its Facebook friends and fans. They can be scrolling through the day’s (or hour’s) postings and suddenly come upon:

“Becky, Lauren, and Whitney have open appointments today. Call and receive 50% off!!” Or: “Haircuts are 30% off today! Rebecca, Whitney, and Lauren have time from 2-4.”

Jessica Williams, owner and senior stylist at Lather Hair Salon, explained that the idea to use Facebook like this just came to her one day when one of her team of stylists had a cancellation. She told her salon manager to post the opening on Facebook, with a discount, and see what happened.

“Within minutes, we had a call,” she said.

Now this Raleigh hair salon makes it a daily habit to post any openings and offer a discount as an incentive to fill them.

Williams said she originally launched Lather’s Facebook page for the usual good-business reasons. “Facebook increases awareness of the salon and helps us stay connected with the local community. We build friendships through the page and maintain customer loyalty. If we have a special coming up or a great how-to tip to offer, we make sure they’re noted on Facebook, often with a link to our website. It’s just a friendly thing to do and another way to be ‘out there’ while we’re working in the salon.”

To get access to these same-day savings, Facebook users must become “fans” of Lather Hair Salon and mention that they saw the special online.

At a time when everyone is pinching pennies, these deep discounts are a win-win proposition – for the customer and the salon.
